LOCATION PROJECT STATUS THAMES Tilbury Container ABP/Forth Ports (FP)/P& O Ports TCS recently installed second berth, new gantry cranes and railhead totalling £ 50m.
Services (TCS) Current volumes 425,000TEUs/annum. Additionally, FP-owned port of Tilbury looking to open up new river berths and create 86 acres additional space through infilling and reclamation projects over next two/three years.
Thamesport HPUK’s south Thames terminal undergoing major refurbishment to 5 quay cranes including raising height and increasing outreach. Improvements being made to A228 approach road (not for HPUK’s account).
London Gateway P&O Ports’ intended £700m redevelopment of the disused brownfield Shellhaven site would produce capacity of 3.5mTEUs. Public inquiry complete. Close proximity to London. Includes large warehousing development and short-sea ro-ro terminal. Extensive dredging of approach channels required. Government decision expected this year.
HARWICH Felixstowe South HPUK’s proposed reconfiguration of Felixstowe’s Landguard Terminal. 1.6mTEU capacity. Ipswich rail tunnel upgraded to accommodate hi-cube containers. Public inquiry underway. Decision expected this year.
Bathside Bay HPUK’s Harwich £300m project. 1.7mTEU capacity. Public inquiry complete. Greenfield site. Could serve Midlands and North without using congested M25. Questions over payment of 10 mile road link to the site. Although Bathside would share approach channel with Felixstowe, dredging would still be needed involving loss of 69ha of mudflats.
Compensation measures proposed. Decision expected this year.
HUMBER Quay 2005 ABP’s planned £30-40m multi-purpose deepwater (but shortsea) riverside terminal at Hull will involve reclamation of 7.5ha of dock and frontage. Will also result in further 9ha becoming available for development. Decision expected this year.
TEES PD Teesport £20m Teesport Container Terminal opened in 2003. Further £20m (estd. ) phase 2 to extend storage and acquire third quay crane . Future objective to expand facility to third terminal in deeper water and attract linehaul business.
Port of Tyne Recent infrastructure improvements include £6.3m warehouse development, £6m investment in new industrial units, a £620,000 extension to the container terminal and over £2.3m on new handling equipment.<$>TYNE FORTH Grangemouth Full warehousing service being developed for companies to integrate the port’s facilities into their supply chains.
ORKNEY Scapa Flow £200m plan for transhipment port at Scapa Flow to serve Scandinavia and Baltic. Planning applications are in the pipeline from groups promoting the development – Orkney Islands Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and International Container Hubs.
CLYDE Hunterston Clydeport’s (Peel Holdings) £200m Hunterston transhipment project is at planning stage. Rail link, environmental and commercial feasibility studies completed or underway, to be followed by planning application.
MERSEY Liverpool New £80m riverside terminal planned at Seaforth to accommodate post-panamax vessels anticipated on transatlantic trade. Feasibility study completed.
Port Salford Manchester Ship Canal’s (Peel Holdings) £150m two-berth tri-modal terminal on brownfield site three miles west of Salford. Projected annual throughput 83,000 TEUs accommodating 250 ship calls a year. Environmental, traffic and other appraisals currently being evaluated. Planning process expected to take a further 12 months.
SEVERN Bristol Portbury: Third quay crane acquisition being considered. £1m spent upgrading one existing crane last year. Now deciding whether to buy new or upgrade second crane. Avonmouth: Acquisition of third crane under consideration.
Civil works planned to increase container capacity. £6.5m being invested to double capacity of new chill store.
SOLENT Southampton Container ABP/P&O Ports’ joint venture, SCT is being optimised to increase overall capacity to 2mTEUs. Focus is on new Terminal (SCT) equipment and solving congestion problems at the gate.
