Ust-Luga boundaries in place
Russias Baltic port of Ust-Luga has officially had its boundaries defined by the central government. This has been done to make foreign and Russian investment in the port more attractive. Located close to the border with the European Union, the port can accommodate bulk carriers of up to 75,000 dwt and crude carriers of up to 120,000 dwt. By 2010, total cargo handled is expected to reach 50m tonnes.
In addition to having been allocated expansion area despite the lack of a tender, a recently formed anti-container pressure group has been set up, while squabbles involving the port authority have broken out. It has now emerged that a leisure area is also to be developed alongside the terminal, effectively reducing the amount of space available to the operator.
