Valencia consolidates shortsea shipping..

Valenciaport is to transfer all shortsea shipping services and new vehicles traffic to a new area based around an extension of the ports Eastern Dyke. A new 250 metre-wide quay, some 1,000 metres in length, is to be built parallel to the dyke, in addition to a second new quay, which will be 350 metres long

alongside draught is planned to be 14.5 metres. The dyke, which will be lengthened by a further 250 metres, will enable 250,000 sq metres of land to be gained from the sea.

Xita quay is also to be extended by 236 metres, adding 25,000 sq metres of new area, where alongside draught will be 16 metres.

This will house a flammable gas terminal, which will transfer from the Eastern Dyke, which in turn will henceforth be used by Grimaldi shortsea services and also ships conveying export vehicles from the nearby Ford plant.

Part of the move by Grimaldi and the shortsea shipping/auto services is also designed to facilitate the construction of the new container terminal recently awarded to MSC (see PS July/August 2004 p.18. )
