Valencia to expand facilities
Valencia port authority has adopted a plan which will ensure that sufficient capacity will be available at the port until at least 2015. Both the main port of Valencia and the secondary harbour at Sagunto will be simultaneously expanded, with all work to be completed by 2007.
In Sagunto, a new southern development will enable the port to increase annual capacity from 4m to 10m tons.
In the meantime work is under way on a new 208 metre quay on the port’s northern edge, which will have an alongside draught of 9 metres.
At Valencia, a new northern expansion is also planned, which is viewed as a much more complicated project than that at Sagunto. Once implemented, it will enable 4.5mTEUs to be handled at a proposed brand new container terminal. This will almost certainly involve the addition of a further stevedoring group at the port.
MSC has also been given permission to build a dedicated terminal for its own vessels on Muelle de Fangas, which will open in 2006. This will be equipped with six super-post-Panamax gantries and 20 RTGs and have a 600,000TEU capacity. A further 900,000TEUs of MSC traffic will remain at the Maritima Valenciana terminal.
