Pointe-Noire expands with new terminal

The new facility, set to open in 2027, will enhance the port’s capacity, with an annual throughput of 1.3 million teu. Estimated at €400 million, the project includes a 750-metre quay and a minimum draught of 17 metres, designed to accommodate larger vessels.

The terminal will be equipped with four fully-electric ship-to-shore cranes and 12 rubber-tyred gantry cranes. Regional reports suggest that China Road and Bridge Corporation will serve as the EPC contractor for the development.

Congo Terminal, which has surpassed its 1 million teu annual capacity since 2022, has seen significant growth since 2009, when it handled just 150,000 teu. As part of the expansion, the port channel will be widened from 180 metres to at least 250 metres, enabling larger vessels to dock.

This project aims to meet growing demand from regional port users, solidifying Pointe-Noire’s position as a key hub for the Congo Basin, with expectations for further growth driven by the region’s increasing population and the country’s substantial oil and gas sector.
