More misfortune for Oakland
There is more misfortune for the Port of Oakland this week following the suspension of two execs over an alleged strip club expense scandal – a port worker has been crushed to death while inspecting a crane.
The unnamed crane mechanic suffered fatal injuries to the chest and head after being crushed by a moving portion of a crane and was taken to Summitt Medical Center, where he later died.
Robert Bernardo, communications manager, Port of Oakland, told Port Strategy: “Right now, the Oakland Police Department and California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) are investigating the incident.”
The Port of Oakland is a landlord port and the accident occurred on Ben E. Nutter Terminal, which is managed by one of Oakland’s seven port tenants, Evergreen Marine Corp.
According to Mr Bernardo, the port was shut down and workers sent home while investigations began into the incident.
The port has a good safety record and Mr Bernardo told PS that the two most recent fatal incidents at the Port of Oakland occurred in December 2007 when a dock worker was hit by a tractor-trailer and in September 2007 when a longshoreman was crushed by a shipping container.
But thankfully these incidents seem to be few and far between.
