Oakland suffers strike backlogs
Following union action from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021 at the Port of Oakland this week, the port is working its way through huge backlogs.
With concerns over the effects of ongoing union picketing at the port, it is becoming increasingly important that the port and SEIU Local 1021 reach a resolution surrounding employee contracts.
Even Oakland’s Mayor Jean Quan had to intervene this week during the strike action to try to get normal operations resumed more speedily.
Following the strikes, Isaac Kos-Read, director of external affairs at the Port of Oakland, told Port Strategy: “We have resumed normal operations at the seaport which started with the graveyard shift last night (Tuesday 21 November) but there is a huge backlog to work with because of the busy holiday season.”
Worse still, the strike situation is still not resolved. Deborah Ale Flint, acting port executive director, Port of Oakland, said: “The port is committed to reaching a mutual agreeable contract as soon as possible.”
The Port of Oakland and SEIU are scheduled to meet for fact finding hearings at the end of the month.
