Pacific coal ports need to expand

Ports on the Pacific coast of North America must expand to accommodate increasing coal exports, William Meister, associate and mining practice leader of Golder Associates has told the Indonesia Coal Investment Forum.

Ports in Canada and the US such as Westshore, Neptune, Ridley Island, Stockton and Long Beach, will need to increase their collective capacity from the current 50m tonnes to 75m tonnes by 2015, he said.

This comes ahead of developments there and in Mexico which could see push capacity up to between 90m tonnes and 160m tonnes annually by 2017.

New ports mentioned were Ambre Morrow Pacific, SSA/Peabody Gateway Pacific, Ambre/Arch Millenium Bulk, KM Port Westward, Mitsui Coos Bay and in Mexico Guaymas and Lazaro Cardenas.

However, funding issues and approval delays mean that not all planned ports will come to fruition, Mr Meister told Port Strategy.
