PANYNJ lays out future spending plans

Among the largest items in the port’s US$175m capital spending plan is the construction of intermodal rail facilities and the rebuilding of ship berths.

This includes US$28.9m for an adjacent rail-barge terminal at Greenville Yard, a rehabilitation and upgrades of ship berths at Port Newark worth US$31.9m.

An upgrade to the existing rail-barge shuttle between New Jersey and Brooklyn will be part of the Greenville Yard project. This was approved this year by the port authority, who will contribute US$320m of the US$356m project cost.

The 2016 budget also includes US$34.5m for work on an intermodal container transfer facility near the GCT-Bayonne container terminal.

Next spring will see the beginning of work on the GCT-Bayonne container terminal which will continue well into 2017. This work is the last of a decade long programme to construct on-dock intermodal terminals at all of the port’s major container terminals, worth over US$600m.

Around 15% of the port’s containers now move by rail, the officials from New York and New Jersey have been trying to increase intermodal rail shipments in order to reduce road congestion and air pollution.

This will continue and be more proactive with the use of the projects in the future spending plan for 2016.
