Labelled “New Zealand’s biggest port infrastructure project” by the company, the work will see the new container-handling area constructed from about 500,000 cu metres of marine sediment dredged from the commercial shipping lane.

The project, which will extend Axis Fergusson by five hectares and increase container capacity by 100,000 TEU, is to be progressively completed over the next few years. Further development work, which will entail adding another 4.4 ha capacity to Axis Fergusson, is to be completed over a longer period of time using port maintenance dredgings.
