Auckland port expansion riles locals

Over 100 prominent New Zealanders have signed an open letter protesting the expansion in Waitemata Harbour which was published by the Stop Stealing Our Harbour group. A large flotilla of vessels and hundreds of protestors also recently gathered to make their opposition to the consented project known.

Auckland Council recently narrowly voted in favour of the reclamation being declared a “discretionary” activity in parts of the port precinct. However, following reported heated debate, some councillors are understood to be reconsidering that position.

Ports of Auckland spokesperson Matt Ball said the berth extensions were “essential” to both accommodate forecast trade growth through the port as well as the increasing physical size of calling vessels.
