Auckland port protestors unbowed
Opponents to Ports of Auckland’s plans to expand its footprint into Waitemata Harbour remain unbowed by a compromise proposal, with the Stop Stealing Our Harbour group organising another public protest and MP Winston Peters initiating a Bill to halt the project.
Port owner, the Auckland Council, recently agreed to only support the 98-metre extension of Bledisloe East Wharf and put the 92-metre extension of Bledisloe East Wharf on hold while the Port Future Study is completed.
However, over 1000 people marched past the port gates in early May to make it known they do not accept the compromise and believe the development will destroy the city’s harbour gateway.
Mr Peters, the leader of New Zealand First, has lodged a Bill in the Members’ Bill Ballot, which if drawn and passed would “freeze the size of the port and push any future growth to other ports”.
“Aucklanders don’t want the cost and they want to save their harbour,” he said.
