Aussie port development reaches astounding levels
The level of port development underway or planned in Australia is astounding. Major coal port expansions are in progress at Newcastle, Hay Point/Dalrymple Bay, Gladstone and Abbot Point and at least two new coal ports are in contemplation in Queensland.
Iron ore miners, driven by demand from China and India in particular, are behind developments in Darwin (Northern Territory), Port Latta (Tasmania), Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Port Bonython (South Australia) and Geraldton, Port Hedland, Dampier, Cape Lambert and Cape Preston in Western Australia – as well as brand new ports such as WA’s Oakajee.
Work on many of these developments began before the global financial crises and backers are unwilling or unable to slow the momentum.
