Capacity boost for Lyttelton

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) is constructing a new 230-metre Cashin Quay wharf which will provide a combined container quay length of 570 metres upon completion in the middle of next year.

Previously having a quay length of 410 metres prior to the February 2011 earthquakes, the larger reinstatement of the wharf and with 14.5-metre berth pocket depth, is expected to deliver a significant boost to capacity and efficiency.

Furthermore, LPC has recently released its 30-year development vision for public consultation.

Developments in the “Port Lyttelton Plan” are forecast to cost about NZ$1bn and take up to 30 years to complete.

LPC chief executive Peter Davie says it made sense to “do things right and to do it once”.

“To simply repair or rebuild what was there would be a failure on our part – we must ensure that we are able to continue to meet the needs of the region now and in the future.”
