Council quashes Tarakohe proposal
A marine farming industry proposal to fund commercial development of Port Tarakohe, located at the northwestern tip of the South Island, has been labelled “one-sided” by the Tasman District Council.
Farmers say the port, which is not currently profitable and is under evaluation by the council, could be developed via a long-term levy-based user-pays model similar to that used at Port Marlborough.
However, the council says the plan would require a significant long-term ratepayer subsidy and fails its criteria for a commercial rate of return.
