Cross roads for NZ

Jens Madsen, managing director of New Zealands Ports of Auckland, has described the country as at a cross-roads, warning that if it does not rise above a parochial mentality it could end up as a spoke to Australia, rather than a hub of its own.

Mr Madsen made his point during his keynote speech the Transport New Zealand Summit, and went on to explain that, “this trend towards loading more international cargo at fewer ports will intensify” in tandem with the growing size of containerships.

He concluded that NZ ports needed to develop “a ‘whole-of-supply-chain’ approach, and a level of alignment not previously seen”.
