Fremantle considers capacity solutions

The port of Fremantle, in conjunction with the newly established Fremantle Ports Optimum Planning Group, has committed to a strategic planning programme to establish a solution to a long term capacity squeeze at the port.

Fremantle’s inner harbour is expected to reach capacity in 2015 and any new port is expected to roughly double container capacity.

The planning group is to develop recommendations for the long-term trade needs of Fremantle Ports and surrounding areas.

One option being considered is for state-owned Fremantle to work with James Point Pty Ltd, a private consortium, to build and operate an expanded port in Kwinana. However, a fully-private, US$365.3m common-user container port south of Fremantle is also on the table.
