Fumigation blamed for health issues

Historic and recent stories of illness and even death among workers exposed to methyl bromide fumigation on the Wellington waterfront have been unveiled by The Wellingtonian.

In response to the article – which cited four cases – CentrePort Wellington chief executive Blair O’Keeffe says third parties fumigate logs and other cargoes in full compliance with regulations.

Otago University pesticide toxicology specialist Leo Schep has reportedly stated that methyl bromide is a gas that dissipated into the atmosphere as soon as released.
