Gladstone hampered by heritage status
Gladstone Ports Corporation has criticised the restrictions that it faces as a result of world heritage status being conferred on the port, claiming that is should only apply to the Great Barrier Reef.
Chief executive Leo Zussino said the restrictions are “akin to having a nature conservation zone declaration over the Queen Street Mall” (a major commercial area in Brisbane).
Mr Zussino said world heritage status was designed to protect the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, not the harbour.
“We must be allowed to continue to develop port facilities and infrastructure in a sustainable way,” he said.
