Large ships trouble Australian ports
An Australian port economist says the pressures on ports are being significantly increased by the challenges of catering for larger ships.
David Bayne told the Pacific 2012 Forum in Adelaide that there was a “huge upsizing” in the global container fleet with a lot of new ships coming onstream, of up to 18,000 teu.
He said the trade route to China had fuelled an increase in vessel sizes and some had struggled coming into Australian ports.
Port analysts had underestimated growth in China in their estimations ten years ago, he added.
