Lyttelton bulks up berths

A post-earthquake insurance settlement for New Zealand’s Lyttelton Port of Christchurch will be used to “optimise facilities for the future” including financing the construction of a new wharf at Cashin Quay 2.

Described as a “key project” for the port by chief executive, Peter Davie the development will increase quay length at the container terminal to 570m and depth to 14.5m, allowing two large container ships to berth at once.

The project will be delivered in stages with the first 55 metre section available later this year and the full 230 metre extension complete towards the middle of 2015.

The wharf will also be a more resilient structure, with the ability to withstand greater seismic activity.
