New port for Queensland’s Cape York

The new development is linked to Rio Tinto’s A$2.6bn Amrun bauxite project in Cape York. The project foresees the construction of a jetty, wharf and ship loaders, with dredging of up to 2.6m cubic metres of marine
sediments to create deeper berth pockets and approach and departure channels.

Construction and operation of the mine will be subject to rigorous environmental controls, set by both the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments. Amrun is expected to begin shipping bauxite to refineries in
Gladstone and to customers in Asia in 2019, replacing production from the company’s depleting East Weipa mine.

The project is expected to increase bauxite exports from

Cape York by around 10m tonnes per year. The new port will be operated by RTA Weipa Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto Aluminium Limited.
