Northport’s future container role

Speculation Northport is about to fulfill a blossoming role handling spill-over container volumes from Auckland and Tauranga has been calmed by port company business development manager John Lee-Richards.

While believing his port is ideally-placed to take such a future step, Mr Lee-Richards says it would first require investment in a container crane and rail link.

However, he says the best overall long-term strategy for handling container traffic in the upper North Island region would be a utilisation of all three ports.
