NZ transparency bill drawn

New Zealand ratepayer-owned ports are expected to soon become subject to the Official Information Act following Labour MP Darien Fenton’s Local Government (Council Controlled Organisations) Amendment Bill being drawn from the ballot.

At present, ports are specifically excluded from public information requests under the Local Government Act.

Maritime Union of New Zealand general secretary Joe Fleetwood said the bill will also require ports to act as a “good employer” and “exhibit social and environmental responsibility in their communities”.
