Unity in NZ port restructure
Port Otago and the Maritime Union of New Zealand have agreed to work collaboratively to handle the ports expected 15% loss in annual container throughput caused by Fonterras recent port usage review.
Unhappy with the port company’s initial restructuring proposal – which potentially signalled 35 redundancies – the union had initiated a “go-slow” on the recent call of the Maersk Dunafare.However, the two parties have since come together in mediation and are now undertaking to work through alternative proposals with the aim of mitigating job losses.
