Unlawful strikes challenged

Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman has launched two prosecutions against the Maritime Union of Australia following allegations of unlawful industrial action at Fremantle and Broome.

The ombudsman alleges workplace laws regarding lawful conduct of industrial action were not observed.

In one case, 113 employees at Fremantle went on strike for about 24 hours from the afternoon of 19^th May 2009 and in the second it is claimed there was an unlawful 24-hour strike by 15 employees of the Broome Port Authority in March last year.
