SFT chosen for major Rostock refurb

The port, the only deep-sea port on the German Baltic Sea coast, is modernising its current fender system to ensure it meets current safety and quality standards.

SFT was commissioned to undertake the task of designing, manufacturing, delivering and installing 59 sets of SPC 800, G3.1 cone fenders, with closed box steel panels measuring 2000 by 3000 mm, and UHMW-PE sliding plates, 50 mm thick each.

The customised steel panels were manufactured for the project at SFT’s production facility in Rechlin, Germany, enabling the port to review and inspect each production step from welding to final coating. Its proximity also avoided any supply chain issues allowed for weekly deliveries, reducing the need for storage space at the port site.

SFT says its engineers had to address a unique design challenge: birds often perch on the fenders, causing paint and rubber deterioration.

To solve this, the company created an angled profile for the steel panels to prevent birds from landing, ensuring better performance, easy maintenance and an extended lifespan.
