…and US $1.5 billion naval base project is a go

The US Department of State has also announced a US$1.5bn project at Callao to modernise Peru’s naval base, in a move seen as seeking to counter Chinese influence in the region and wider Latin American continent.

The naval base, which is the main facility for Peru’s navy, is located to the north of the commercial port in Callao. It dates back to the 1930s and shares the waterways with the commercial port operated by APMT and DP World. The US State Department said the project will improve Peru’s port infrastructure and potentially enable some cargo-handling activities. It will also provide a safer, more efficient platform for naval operations.

Also notable, MSC’s Terminal Investment Ltd (TIL), is acquiring Terminal Portuario Paracas, operator of Puerto General San Martin in Pisco (Peru). The multipurpose facility is only 170 miles south of Lima and can be reached by truck in under four hours. It has 700m of quay and uses mobile harbour cranes, handling 90,000 TEU in 2025. It could offer some competitive overlap for smaller vessels to Callao.
