BEST opens expanded Navarra terminal

The project follows Hutchison Ports BEST’s award of the ADIF concession in 2024 and has received backing from the European Union’s NextGeneration funding programme.

Expansion works have tripled the terminal’s operational capacity to 42,000 square metres, adding two new 550-metre rail tracks and a dedicated operational yard for rail activities and container storage.

“This investment represents a strong commitment to Navarra for the coming decades,” said Pablo García, director of Navarra Intermodal Terminal and Synergy, Hutchison Ports BEST’s rail operator. “The expansion of the terminal will allow us to continue supporting the growth of companies across the region and consolidate a logistics infrastructure capable of enhancing their competitiveness in international markets.”

Since opening in 2013, the terminal has grown from operating a single weekly rail service to providing five regular connections with the Port of Barcelona, primarily through Synergy.

These services give businesses in Navarra access to more than 200 international ports, supporting export and import operations.

The expansion also supports Hutchison Ports BEST’s sustainability strategy through the introduction of electric equipment to replace diesel-powered machinery, reducing emissions while encouraging a greater shift from road to rail freight.

Speakers at the inauguration highlighted public-private collaboration as essential to strengthening logistics infrastructure, supporting international trade and advancing transport decarbonisation goals.
