CROSS-CONNECT strengthens Adriatic links
The CROSS-CONNECT project has unveiled the results of its cross-border initiative to improve passenger mobility across the Adriatic region, highlighting a series of innovative transport solutions designed to strengthen links between ports, airports and urban centres.
The project was presented during the Adriatic Sea Forum in Venice and is funded through the Interreg Italy-Croatia Programme 2021–2027. It brings together eight partners, including the ports of Venice, Bari-Brindisi, Pula and Dubrovnik, the airports of Venice and Dubrovnik, and urban transport operators serving Bari-Brindisi and Pula.
During the event, project partners introduced the Strategic Roadmap – The Framework of Innovative Intermodal Connections Between Ports and the Hinterland, a long-term strategy for integrating maritime, air and urban transport which also aims to improve governance and passenger services across the region.
Among the flagship initiatives is the Venice Fly & Cruise pilot, developed by the Port System Authority of the Northern Adriatic and Venice Marco Polo Airport operator SAVE. The project enables cruise passengers to check in luggage at the airport before boarding their ship or complete cruise check-in at the port before collecting baggage at their destination airport. New digital information displays, dedicated port check-in desks, enhanced security systems and improved passenger signage have also been introduced.
In Brindisi, the Southern Adriatic Ports Authority and STP Brindisi have implemented real-time passenger information systems linking ferry, cruise and public transport services to improve journeys between the port, city centre and major transport hubs.
The Pula pilot has introduced a new electric bus route, charging infrastructure, ticketing facilities and solar-powered waste compactors to encourage sustainable mobility while reducing carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, Dubrovnik Airport and the Dubrovnik Port Authority have developed an integrated digital platform combining airport, port and public transport information, alongside introducing electric vehicles and equipment to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.
