Cumbrae ferry terminal upgrade begins

Led by contractors George Leslie Ltd, the development will see the construction of a new slipway, a traffic marshalling area and a terminal building at Cumbrae Port, providing improved amenities for both the public and employees.

The Scottish government is investing over £12 million in the project, supporting the long-term reliability of the lifeline Cumbrae–Largs ferry route.

“This project will introduce a new terminal building and a more durable slipway, ensuring the continuation of reliable lifeline ferry services,” said Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop.

“Developed in close consultation with the community, the upgrades will improve safety and accessibility for all who use the port.”

Initial site setup and ground investigations begin this week, with full construction expected to commence in January 2026. The existing slipway, which has reached the end of its serviceable life, will be removed once the new one is complete.

“These upgrades will not only benefit residents and businesses but also the many visitors who travel to Cumbrae each year,” said Ramsay Muirhead, director of port infrastructure at Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited.

“Working closely with the community has been central to shaping this project, which will deliver a safer, more efficient and welcoming ferry terminal.”
