Fender expertise in Rio de Janeiro’s port expansion

ShibataFender has showcased its engineering expertise at the Rio de Janeiro port expansion being led by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI).

A key feature of the project is a 100-metre berth extension at International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) – Terminal 1, increasing its capacity to accommodate larger vessels and enhance operational efficiency.

Carioca Engenharia, the firm managing the expansion, has partnered with ShibataFenderTeam (SFT) to design a state-of-the-art fender system, crucial for ensuring the durability and safety of the port infrastructure.

“Our innovative fender solution addresses the unique challenges of this expansion,” said an SFT spokesperson.

“By adhering to the latest PIANC Guidelines and employing our in-house engineering expertise, we’ve ensured enhanced reliability and a longer lifespan for the fender system.”

Fender solution

The fender solution includes five advanced Cone Fender systems (SPC 1300, G2.5) with large closed-box panels and 17 high-capacity bollards.

Notably, SFT recommended a standard orientation for the fenders to reduce maintenance costs and extend their operational life – a stark improvement over the inverted orientation of existing systems.

This project underscores SFT’s commitment to a ’holistic approach’ in fender design, which integrates all aspects of the system, including rubber units, supporting structures and project conditions.

By aligning with industry best practices, SFT said that this approach ensures the port’s infrastructure will support increased capacity and future-proof its operations.

The Rio de Janeiro port expansion reinforces the critical role of fenders in providing innovative port infrastructure in modernising shipping terminals.
