Hueneme and Paita ports partner

The agreement was formalised through a memorandum of understanding signed during a visit by Peruvian port officials to Ventura County.

“This relationship with Peru is an important one we intend to nurture as we investigate more ways to bring benefit to these two great countries through trade,” said Jess Ramirez, president of the Oxnard Harbor District.

The sister port agreement emphasises strategic goals such as improving transparency in procurement, developing new trade routes and enhancing maritime logistics between the two nations.

Peru is already the Port of Hueneme’s fourth largest trading partner by volume, and Hueneme is uniquely positioned as the only West Coast port certified to handle Peruvian blueberries under cold treatment protocols.

“The sister port relationship highlights our shared vision not only for global collaboration, but also for sharing best practices and expanding trade opportunities that will benefit local economies in both regions,” said Kristin Decas, chief executive of the Port of Hueneme.

Eduardo Cerdeira, chief executive of Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos in Paita, echoed that sentiment. “This marks a milestone that goes beyond the relationship between two ports,” he said. “It promotes a model for expanding new trade alternatives and maritime routes.”

The deal is part of the US Department of State’s Sister Ports Program, which supports international cooperation and economic development through port partnerships.
