Liverpool port to boost UK construction

The partnership between Peel Ports Group and Medcem will establish a deep-water terminal at the former P&O site at Gladstone Dock.

This project comes at a crucial time as the UK construction sector rebounds, particularly with the government’s ambitious goal of building 1.5 million homes by the end of the current parliament.

“By creating smarter, more sustainable import hubs, we can help building firms secure the materials they need,” said Andrew Martin, group development director at Peel Ports Group.

“This project reinforces Liverpool’s role as a base for investment and creates new employment opportunities for a sustainable future.”

Construction at the 5.75 acre (2.33 hectares) site is set to begin in May 2025, with completion expected by mid-2026.

The first phase will include four silos with a combined storage capacity of 45,000 tonnes.

“The logistical advantages of Liverpool enhance our ability to accommodate large vessels and improve product handling, ensuring a more efficient service for our clients,” said Enver Celikbas, business development and investments director at Medcem.
