MedPort Expansion in Final Stages…
APM Terminals is ramping up operations at its MedPort Tangier facility in Morocco by confirming the final part of its 2 million TEU expansion. The expansion means that the terminal can offer a total capacity of 5.2 million TEU per annum.
Keld Pedersen, Managing Director, APM Terminals West Med, notes: “Almost exactly a year ago, the second phase of our expansion went live – this month we have added one million TEU to our capacity here in Tangier, which means that we are top-tuned to deliver for Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, when the new network will be phased in from February 2025.”
According to APM Terminals, the final stage of the expansion at MedPort Tangier will be “one of the most technologically advanced, efficient and safest container terminals in the world.” The facility uses an auto mooring system for vessel berthing, digital berth planning, and the specially developed Gemini simulation tool.
“The expansion not only gives us more capacity it features advanced technology helping us reduce port hours, improve the productivity of our cranes and lower direct emissions from vessels by using shore-power deployed by the port authority,” states Pedersen.
The two terminals APM Terminals operates in Morocco will serve as hub-ports supporting operations of the Gemini Cooperation, which is Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s operational collaboration covering East-West trades. The development in Tangier has also seen an additional 500 new workers employed during 2023 and 2024.
