Millbay upgrade boosts UK connectivity

The upgrade strengthens the port’s role as a vital hub for passenger and freight services between the UK and continental Europe.

Julian Walker, chief commercial officer and regional director at ABP, underscored the importance of the investment: “This opening marks the successful delivery of a bold vision for Millbay,” he said.

“The upgraded terminal strengthens our national and international maritime links and supports growth in both freight and tourism sectors.”

Key enhancements include a new passenger boarding bridge, a strengthened West Wharf to handle larger vessels and a modernised terminal with enhanced passenger facilities.

Upgrades to freight and cruise infrastructure also position Millbay to support growing demand for low-carbon transport and international trade.

Christophe Mathieu, chief executive of Brittany Ferries, highlighted the port’s strategic significance. “Maritime connectivity is the lifeblood of our business, and these improvements ensure that Millbay remains a vital gateway between the UK and Europe,” he said.

Delivered in partnership with Plymouth City Council and Brittany Ferries, with support from the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, the project reinforces Plymouth’s status as a key maritime city.
