Montreal Port expansion project begins

The first steps include essential site preparations and a major contract award for water infrastructure work.

The CTCGP consortium, comprising Canadian firms Pomerleau and Aecon, has been awarded a CAN$609 million CAD contract for all water works associated with the project. These include dock construction and dredging, set to begin in 2026 pending necessary authorisations.

The initial work includes site fencing, access roads, work platforms, tree cutting and the installation of site offices and garages.

“Today we move from planning to action,” said Julie Gascon, president and chief executive of the MPA.

“The launch of preparatory work paves the way for the realisation of a major and structuring project for the Quebec and Canadian economy.”

Approved in 2021 by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Contrecœur terminal project is sited on land acquired by the MPA more than 30 years ago. When fully operational by 2030, the terminal will handle up to 1.15 million teu annually and support over 10,000 jobs.

The terminal will feature two berths, a large container handling area, an intermodal rail yard, a road-connected truck gate and supporting infrastructure, reinforcing the St. Lawrence Valley’s role as a key logistics hub for Canada.
