New RoRo berth opens at London Medway

The ceremony at the Sheerness port celebrated the completion of the in-river vessel berth and floating pontoon, which will support increased RoRo traffic and more efficient logistics operations.

One of Finnlines’ new Finneco-class hybrid RoRo vessels docked during the event, symbolising the launch of a regular freight route connecting London Medway with Finland, Poland, Belgium and Spain.

“It’s fantastic to welcome guests and customers to our port to mark the completion of our £30m new RoRo berth,” said Richard Goffin, port director.

“This major new addition to our infrastructure will bring huge benefits to the port and the wider supply chain, as well as future-proof our operations here for many years to come.”

The hybrid vessels, each capable of carrying up to 400 trailers, promise faster loading, unloading and transit times, enhancing the reliability of supply chains across Europe.

The new berth will serve vessels carrying a wide range of cargo – from automobiles and paper reels to construction machinery and steel – and free up adjacent berths for additional cargo types.

With major clients such as Volkswagen and CEVA relying on the port for their southern UK operations, the development is expected to significantly support automotive, construction and paper industries.

Future investments, including a new rail connection, are planned to further strengthen the port’s role as a key logistics hub.
