Peru completes major port upgrade

Led by APM Terminals Callao in partnership with the Peruvian State, this US$95 million investment dramatically enhances the terminal’s capacity, making it the fastest grain unloading facility in South America.

At the heart of Stage 3A is the construction of 12 vertical silos, boosting grain storage capacity from 25,000 to 85,000 tonnes. Two high-capacity continuous ship unloaders (CSUs) were also installed, increasing unloading speeds from 900 to 1,300 tonnes per hour, significantly reducing vessel turnaround times.

“This phase represents a transformative step in our journey to build a world-class logistics hub on the Pacific coast,” said Carlos Arias, chief executive of APM Terminals Callao.

“The vertical design and free-fall system of the new silos allow us to serve more vessels, more safely and with greater energy efficiency.”

Additional infrastructure upgrades include paving 2.13 hectares to improve cargo flow, opening a new Gate No. 3 for rolling and oversized cargo and installing eight weighbridges, doubling entry capacity.

Stage 3A is part of a broader US$1.2 billion six-phase concession agreement. Stage 3B will focus on dock reconstruction and new cranes with an investment of US$328 million.
