Port Fòrum reinforces breakwater
Port Fòrum in Barcelona has begun construction on the reinforcement of its outer breakwater, a strategic infrastructure project aimed at enhancing coastal protection, harbour safety and environmental sustainability.
The initiative marks a major step forward in climate-resilient development for one of the city’s most emblematic waterfront areas.
The project officially commenced this week with the installation of the first Xbloc concrete block, making Port Fòrum the first port in Spain to implement this coastal protection system.
Developed to withstand severe storm impacts and reduce environmental footprint, the breakwater will extend approximately 750 metres in length and rise 2.7 metres above sea level, with a foundation reaching 9.3 metres below.
The specially shaped concrete units are said to offer superior hydraulic performance while using 40% less material than traditional solutions, cutting CO₂ emissions by around 3,000 tonnes during manufacturing.
The system also allows for faster and more efficient installation, cutting construction time by 30% and minimising disruption to the marine environment.
Beyond protecting the coastline, the breakwater aims to enhance the area’s cultural, recreational and civic use, supporting a sustainable balance between urban life and the marine ecosystem.
