Senegal’s growth boosted by Ndayane port works

With an investment of US$1.2 billion, the project includes the dredging of a 5 km-long shipping channel using the Willem Van Rubroeck to allow the world’s largest container ships to dock.

“The Port of Ndayane will elevate Senegal and impact trade across the African continent,” said DP World group chair and chief executive, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

“Our plans extend beyond the port with the development of an economic zone near the port and Blaise Diagne International Airport.”

Phase 1 of the project will see the completion of an 840 metre quay and a 5 km channel, enabling Senegal to handle 1.2 million teu each year. Phase 2 will expand the port with an additional 410 metre quay, cementing Ndayane as a key logistics hub in west Africa.

The development of Ndayane complements DP World’s success at the Port of Dakar, which has seen significant growth in recent years. The new port addresses limitations in Dakar’s urban area, providing a strategic solution for Senegal’s long-term trade ambitions.

In collaboration with British International Investment, DP World aims to increase Senegal’s GDP by 3%, adding US$15 billion in trade value by 2035.

The project will create over 1,800 jobs during construction and is expected to support 2.3 million jobs once operational, including 22,000 directly linked to expanded trade activities.
