Solent Freeport to boost youth prospects
Solent Freeport has launched a new £50,000 Apprenticeship Incentive Programme aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the Solent region recruit an apprentice for the first time while creating employment opportunities for young people who were previously not in education, employment or training (Neet).
Delivered in partnership with the Solent Growth Partnership through the Solent Business Growth Service, the programme offers financial incentives of up to £2,000 per apprentice, alongside tailored business support designed to reduce recruitment barriers and strengthen local skills development.
“This programme is about creating real opportunity – for employers who want to grow but face recruitment challenges and for individuals who need a route into skilled employment,” explained Brian Johnson, chair of the Solent Freeport.
“By working with the Solent Growth Partnership, we’re ensuring freeport investment directly supports people, productivity and long-term prosperity across the region.”
The fund will support 10 Foundation Apprenticeships, with grants of £2,000 available per apprenticeship and 20 General Apprenticeship Standards, with grants of £1,500 available. Funding will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to eligibility and availability.
The initiative targets four priority growth sectors: Business Services, Engineering and Manufacturing, Software and Data, and Hardware, Network and Infrastructure.
“Apprenticeships are a proven way for SMEs to build skills and talent, but the first step can feel daunting,” said Rachael Randall, chair of the Solent Growth Partnership Business Board.
“This incentive, combined with practical business support through the Solent Business Growth Service, helps employers take that step with confidence while opening doors for young people who might otherwise be left behind.”
In addition to financial support, participating employers will receive guidance on recruitment, onboarding and business growth through the Solent Business Growth Service.
Eligible applicants must be SMEs operating within the Solent region, recruiting their first apprentice in one of the designated sectors, with the apprentice having been Neet immediately before starting. Applications must be submitted before apprenticeship starts and cannot be made retrospectively.
