Caterpillar supports sustainable cities
Much of the world’s population lives in coastal cities built up around ports so a new injection of funding by the Caterpillar Foundation to the Sustainable Cities Initiative this week is important news.
A five year pledge of $12.5m sees the company doing its bit to focus on key urban developments in China, India and Brazil to advance the progress of environmentally sustainable cities.
WRI is partnering up with five urban centres to use “avoid, shift and improve” strategies to increase energy efficiency, curb greenhouse gas emissions and improve water quality, urban mobility and land use.
“WRI’s work in sustainable urbanisation will go a long way toward making the great urban centres of tomorrow more sustainable and liveable for all inhabitants,” said Caterpillar Brazil Country Manager Luiz Calil. “With its focus on sustainable progress, this project closely aligns with Caterpillar’s core business and will hopefully prove to be a template for more sustainable growth all over the world.”
China, India and Brazil are among the world’s most rapidly expanding nations – in China, experts predict that by 2030, 70% of its people will live in cities. Rapid urbanisation poses substantial challenges, when poorly managed, cities have the potential to undermine economic growth, realise environmental targets or lift people out of poverty.
