CMA CGM commits to lowering emissions

In 2013, its globally operated fleet achieved a CO² performance of 4% and its owned fleet 8% – a 40% reduction since 2005.

The operator puts this down to concrete actions to minimise the impact of its activities on the environment and develop new ecological solutions.

It has achieved significant milestones in green technology. For example, with the CMA CGM Jules Verne, inaugurated in June 2013. The vessel is equipped with a propeller boss cap fin, fast oil recovery, hydrodynamic bulbous bow and a ballast water treatment system based on UV lights.

Additionally, in 2013 the operator’s first ships were retrofitted with new bulbous bows to continuously improve energy efficiency. Three 8500 teu vessels have already been equipped and 25 additional vessels will be equipped by the end of 2014.

Going forward, the operator has also furthered its work in conjunction with classification societies and Chinese shipyards on an alternative propulsion project for an LNG powered container carrier that it said should help to reduce CO² emissions by a further 20%.

The group is also going to be equipping six ships with a mobile container solution, making cold ironing (or AMP) a modular practice. The first device was installed on the CMA CGM Libra (11400 teu) in January 2014.
