First Liebherr cranes to Peru

The order consists of one super post panama ship to shore crane (STS) and two rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTG), which are due for delivery at the end of this year. The new cranes will join a pair of Liebherr mobile harbour cranes (LHM 550) that have already been delivered to the port.

This equipment upgrade will allow the port to offer its clients substantially improved services for container and bulk handling. Not to mention cash in on greater efficiency and a lower cost to the environment.

Liebherr STS Cranes use a lattice structure for the main beam and boom, which has a number of benefits. A lighter construction means reduced wheel loadings and this makes for a stiffer crane, which ultimately leads to greater productivity and reduced energy consumption per box. They’re also capable of feeding power back to the grid, thereby reducing energy costs.

When it comes to Liebher’s RTGs, the unique 8 rope reeving no sway system helps to ensure productivity levels of between 30% to 40% greater when compared with alternative models.

Trevor O’Donoghue, Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd, said to Green Port: “Essentially, this ensures that cost per box moved and energy consumption per box is lower.”

The RTG’s variable speed drive, dual speed drive and hybrid power system utilising capacitors all mean reduced fuel consumption.

Mr O’Donoghue pointed out that all Liebherr cranes feature specially designed Liebherr drives and so require fewer components, less copper and ultimately lower power consumption.

Liebherr is investing in a new 16,400m2 production hall at its Irish Killarney plant which should deliver a substantial increase in capacity at the end of this year.
