Peel Ports invests in larger vessel
European port operator, Peel Ports, has invested in a significantly larger vessel for its Manchester Ship Canal container service in the UK, following an increase in demand from customers including Kellogg, Princes Foods and Kingsland Wine.
The investment in the Coastal Deniz, which has a 260 teu capacity, follows a similar upgrade in May 2012. The vessel, which will make up to four sailings a week, has 60% more capacity compared to the previous vessel used by Peel Ports on the UK’s largest inland seaway.
Peel Ports says that by transporting significantly larger volumes of containers per sailing, the larger vessel will increase the value it offers to customers whilst considerably reducing their environmental impact.
Stephen Carr, head of business development, Peel Ports, said: “We know that our customers value efficiency and sustainability, and this upgrade allows customers to reduce their carbon footprint in a cost neutral manner.”
He added: “The Deniz will move in the region of 20,000 containers in 2013. That’s 20,000 fewer containers making the journey between Liverpool and Manchester by truck. In terms of carbon footprint, that’s a huge saving – around 1000 tonnes of carbon and 1.3 million km of freight taken off UK roads every year.”
The Coastal Deniz will sail between the Port of Liverpool’s Seaforth container terminal and Irlam container terminal near Trafford Park, Manchester. The service will also make calls en route at Ellesmere Port.
