US research partnership underway
A partnership to advance the research and development of ocean energy has been signed by The New England Marine Renewable Energy Centre (MREC) and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
The coopertive research and development agreement will test renewable energy from ocean waves, tidal currents and offshore wind. The collaboration includes offshore trained test engineers and technicians from the MREC at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the US department of energy’s NREL.
John Miller, executive director, MREC, said: “We’ve got the in-water test facilities up and running with MHK devices operating and NREL has the technical expertise and experience to ensure we make the most out of devices operating on-site by collecting valuable test data.”
In the initial year of the three year agreement, assessments of the MREC sites, priority infrastructure needs and the development of test protocols for the MREC sites will be carried out. These test protocols will also determine the need for general test protocols for the marine hydrokinetic power (MHK) community.
