Zero emissions project wins award
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and Gottwald Port Technology have been awarded the Hanse Globe 2011 sustainability prize for their ‘Zero Emissions’ pilot project.
The project paves the way for environmentally friendly battery operated automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) to be used at the HHLA container terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in future.
The AGVs have been tested at the terminal since May 2011 and carry containers between the ship and the block storage yard – there is no comparable battery operated commercial vehicle intended for such heavy loads available anywhere else.
“This is a great achievement for Demag Cranes and for us. Not only were we able to integrate the battery operated AGVs smoothly into terminal operations, but are now also in a position to increase our commitment to climate protection in the port even further by cutting emissions,” commented Dr Stefan Behn, HHLA Executive Board member for the container segment.
The pilot project was concluded in the autumn and was sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment – battery powered AGVs enable port operators to reduce exhaust gases and noise emissions without loss of performance. The AGVs will now be tested through the winter. If this is successful, HHLA intend to invest in battery operated AGVs in the future.
