Felixstowe upgrades tractor fleet CCTV
The Port of Felixstowe has appointed Centrad to install new video CCTV systems across its terminal tractor fleet as part of a drive to improve safety, monitoring and operational efficiency.
Under the deal, Centrad will supply and retrofit two-camera systems onto 76 terminal tractor units operating at the port.
The company has already completed earlier work at the site, having previously retrofitted 49 tractor units with more comprehensive four-camera systems.
“Ports are high-traffic hubs where vehicles, heavy machinery and personnel operate in very close proximity,” said Geoff Cross, managing director of Centrad.
“CCTV systems provide an essential layer of visibility, helping improve safety while giving managers real-time insight into vehicle movements, driver behaviour and site activity.”

Each vehicle in the latest rollout has been fitted with a five-channel digital video recorder featuring a 2TB hard drive, providing high-capacity storage for recorded footage. The units are also 4G-ready, allowing remote access functionality to be activated in the future if required.
The system enables managers to retrieve and review footage quickly without removing vehicles from service or interrupting daily operations. Port operators say this helps speed up incident investigations while ensuring clear video evidence is available to support driver welfare, on-site safety and insurance claims where necessary.
In addition to recording footage, the technology can support live-stream monitoring when 4G connectivity is enabled. This allows operational teams to observe activity in real time, respond more quickly to incidents and make informed decisions as situations unfold in the busy port environment.
The recorded footage is also expected to play a role in staff training. Real-life examples from daily port operations can be used to demonstrate best practice, helping drivers and staff better understand safe manoeuvring and decision-making while operating heavy vehicles in high-traffic areas.
