MacGregor launches balanced container lashing
MacGregor has unveiled its Balanced Lashing System, a new solution aimed at solving the long-standing challenge of uneven load distribution on container ships.
By using elastic elements, traditionally applied in hatch cover bearing pads, the system distributes forces evenly across lashings, reducing stress on upper turnbuckles while enabling safer, heavier stacks.
“Our Balanced Lashing System answers the critical question of whether to prioritise safety or capacity by delivering both,” said Magnus Sjöberg, executive vice president, MacGregor.
“It allows for a more intuitive lashing process while boosting the vessel’s earning potential.”
The system has undergone two years of onboard trials and is already in service, ordered for over 100 upcoming ships. It is approved by DNV and ABS with Lloyd’s Register approval pending. Shipowners can now upgrade existing vessels without hot works, replacing only the upper turnbuckles.
Other shipping technology providers have introduced similar solutions. Cargotec, through its MacGregor and Hiab divisions, offers adjustable twistlocks, lashing bridges and reinforced turnbuckles designed to absorb dynamic forces and stabilise container stacks. Meanwhile, Wärtsilä has developed shock-absorbing lashing components that smooth vertical impacts from ship rolling, enhancing operational resilience in extreme sea states.
These systems collectively address a critical industry issue: uneven lashing loads often cause broken container corners, lost cargo and operational delays. By implementing mechanical and elastic solutions, shipowners can increase deck payloads by up to 10%, while improving crew safety and protecting cargo integrity.
